A planned nationwide protest is set to take place in Nigeria on August 1st, 2024, as citizens express their frustration with the country’s economic hardship. The protest, which has gained traction on social media, has prompted a meeting between traditional rulers and President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Traditional rulers have called for calm and patience, urging the government to address the nation’s concerns. The Dein of Agbor, HRM Benjamin Keagborekuzi, stated that the traditional leaders will listen to the youths and work towards finding a solution. The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeye Enitan Ogunwusi, also called for caution, warning that the protest should not be hijacked by those seeking to loot and destroy property.
The protest comes as Nigeria faces a crippling 34.2% inflation rate, exacerbated by the cancellation of a popular fuel subsidy and the devaluation of the naira. President Tinubu has called for the demonstration to be avoided, warning that it could lead to violence and disorder.
The Nigerian government is hoping to avoid a situation similar to the recent anti-government protests in Kenya, which resulted in dozens of deaths. Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun has warned that the protests should not be allowed to snowball into violence or disorder.
The planned protest has also drawn attention to a prophecy made by Prophet TB Joshua in 2013, in which he predicted a revolution starting in one African country and spreading to others. While it is unclear if the prophecy is related to the current situation in Nigeria, it has sparked interest and discussion among Nigerians.
As the protest approaches, Nigerians are left wondering if their voices will be heard and if the government will take action to address the economic hardship facing the country.
